| 内容記述 | 本論は英語の関係詞節について，ある種の例外的用法の分析を手がかりに，段階性を特徴とした新たな分類を試みるものである．英語の関係詞節は，通例，制限的用法と非制限的用法の２つに大別される．一般に，制限節が先行詞の指示対象を限定する役割を持つのに対し，非制限節は，先行詞の指示対象が既に先行詞によって特定されているので，先行詞と別個の情報単位を構成し，その情報構造上の特徴を反映して２つの節は休止あるいはコンマによって区切られると考えられている．本論では，先行詞の内容を限定していないと思われる制限節や，前後がコンマで区切られていない非制限節といった，いわば例外的な関係詞節についての意味的・語用論的考察を行う．その結果，主節と関係詞節は「必然性」という概念に基づく段階的な連結関係を持ち，それを背景に例外的表現形式が実現されることを示す．さらに，この段階性を反映した関係詞節の新たな分類を提案し，関係詞節全体の連結関係についての一般化を行う． | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | This paper is concerned with how English relative clauses can be classified in terms of functional and pragmatic properties of clausal connection between the main and relative clauses. It is generally accepted that relative clauses are classified into two broad categories, restrictive and nonrestrictive relative clauses. A restrictive relative clause is regarded as giving necessary information to identify the referent of the antecedent, whereas a nonrestrictive relative clause gives additional information about the referent, which means that a nonrestrictive relative clause is always preceded by a pause, or a comma in written English, that marks separation between different information units. However, a closer study of relative clauses in written English has revealed that it is not uncommon that a restrictive relative clause gives information that simply describes the antecedent rather than identifying the referent and that a nonrestrictive relative clause directly follows the antecedent without the insertion of a pause or a comma between them. This suggests an intriguing possibility that there may be certain factors that allow writers to use such "exceptional" forms of expression. After pointing out several problems in the previous analyses of such expressions, this paper focuses on certain discoursefunctional and pragmatic properties found in the connection between the main and relative clauses, and introduces a general idea necessity in order to give a better account of such exceptional relative clauses. Finally, it also proposes a new classification of relative clauses that reflects the gradience based on this general idea and argues that the classification has an advantage over the traditional restrictive-nonrestrictive dichotomy. | |||||||||
